Here at Orchard Junior School we believe that reading is an essential and lifelong skill. Our school library is available for all pupils to use throughout the day with classes also having dedicated time each week to browse the books with their class teacher.

All pupils are expected to read aloud to parents at least three times a week and record this in their reading journal therefore we have a wide range of genres for the children to choose from.

As well as our physical library in school all pupils have access to our online library. This can be easily accessed through the school website using your child’s Purple Mash login details.

Winter Reading Challenge

This year, the Library's Winter Reading Challenge is all about getting cosy together to share the love of reading. It kicks-off on 6 January 2022 and runs for eight weeks, until the end of the spring half-term.

Children can read or listen to any four books to complete the challenge. This includes books they read or listen to for school, with family members and friends over Zoom, bedtime stories, non-fiction books, eBooks and audiobooks.

Those who visit their local library will be given a collector’s card and each time they finish a book they will be able to collect a sticker. At the end of their challenge they can visit the library to receive their finisher’s certificate, but the most important thing is that your pupils enjoy some winter reading for pleasure!

The Reader Teacher Is a great website dedicated to the latest reads, reviews and recommendations based on your child’s age or preferred reading style.

All the Fun of the Book Fair!

A Big Thank you! Thanks to your participation in the Scholastic Book Fair we were able to purchase over 100 new books for the School Library. Thank you so much and even if you didn’t manage to buy through the fair we hope that it gave you some ideas for Christmas Lists!

We have created the school’s first Amazon wish list. Due to restrictions we have been unable to run any fundraising events this year and so we are turning to our community to help us out.

We’ve decided to use this system to list the books that have been requested by the children, relating to topics that the children will be learning about or to replace books that are looking a bit tired.

Simply click on your child’s year group link below and browse away! Feel free to choose and send books at any time and to leave a message but remember to select the school’s address for delivery at the checkout.
